PALO ALTO, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Washington men's soccer team stunned No. 4 and previously unbeaten Stanford, 2-1, in the first minute of overtime action in front of 832 fans at New Maloney Field Friday night. It was the fourth straight win for the Huskies and their second victory over a top-10 team in the last three games. The Cardinal, who lead the nation in scoring and in defense, had given up just one goal all season.
Washington improves to 7-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Pac-10. Stanford, which entered the game with a school record 19-match unbeaten home streak, drops to 8-1-1. It was just the second loss for the Cardinal at Maloney Field since 1997.
The scoring started early for both teams, with Stanford getting on the board first when Ryan Nelsen put a header in the net at 19:05. The Huskies answered quickly when Bryn Ritchie's (Medford, Ore.) shot was deflected to Zach Kingsley (Spokane, Wash.), who beat the Cardinal keeper to the near post at 22:08.
The teams went scoreless from there on out, to send the game into overtime. It didn't last long though, as Ritchie came through again, at 90:53. Husky forward Jake Sagare (Yakima, Wash.) dribbled past a pair of Stanford defenders before being taken down just outside the goalie box. After a Stanford yellow card, Ben Somoza's (Edmonds, Wash.) ensuing free kick bounced off the crossbar and Ritchie headed it into the net for the win.
Stanford had 17 shots in the game while Washington had five, two by Kingsley, and the Cardinal carried an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Husky goalkeeper Chad Olsen earned his seventh win of the season and registered three saves in the effort.
"This is a big win, over a team like Stanford, on the road," said Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We battled hard throughout the whole game, including overtime. We actually got stronger as the game went on. Our conditioning paid off. We hung in there defensively while still looking for our chances to win and that's what happened. We were under pressure and we bent a few times but we didn't break. It was a dramatic win for us and a great confidence booster. To hang in there and battle with a team of that quality, on the road, shows we've taken a big step forward."
Washington makes a quick trip home and will host California at 2:15 p.m., Sun., Oct. 8. The Bears are coming off a 1-1 tie at Oregon State Friday afternoon. The game is a doubleheader, following the UW-California women's game at 12 noon.
