PHOENIX - Creighton scored six runs in the top of the ninth to overtake the Washington baseball team and beat the Huskies 12-10 in both teams' season opener Thursday at Papago Park in the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament.
With four runs already across in the ninth and the score tied 10-10, Blue Jays catcher Dave Rowley belted a two-run homer off of UW closer Michael Done (0-1) to break the tie.
The Huskies got two home runs and six RBI from sophomore left fielder Todd Linden (Bremerton, Wash.). Linden's first homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, closed what had been once been a 6-2 CU lead to 6-5. In the eighth, he belted a three-run homer to give Washington a 10-6 lead.
Done, who also started at third base for the Huskies, hit two triples while going 3-for-4 with three runs. Junior center fielder Marc Rittenhouse led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run and freshman catcher Jefferson Thiel had a pair of RBI.
UW starter Jeff Carlsen fanned seven over five and one-third innings, but allowed six earned runs on nine hits. Creighton reliever Chris Ringleb (1-0) earned the win with two and one-thirds innings of work.
Blue Jays shortstop Ken Sarna went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI to lead his team.
Friday, the Huskies take on Nevada in a 2:00 p.m. game at Papago Park.
