Top-Ranked Huskies Split Twinbill With No. 19 Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 1 Washington softball team concluded its 14-game road trip by splitting a doubleheader with 19th-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday and will enter the Pac-10 season next weekend with a 36-3 record. UW won the first game, 4-0, before falling in the second, 1-0, in nine innings.
In the opener, senior Jaime Clark reached first on a fielder's choice and scored when Spediacci's pop-up single to right field foiled the defense in the fourth frame. Senior Rosie Leutzinger doubled in the fifth inning and scored on consecutive walks by juniors Kelly Hauxhurst, Kim DePaul and redshirt freshman Jenny Topping.
Another run came in the sixth when senior Melissa Downs singled before pinch runner Becky Simpson moved to third on a sacrifice by junior Christie Rosenblad and senior Erin Helgeland's at-bat and scored on an error. Topping scored the final run after she singled and rounded the bases on a triple to right field by Spediacci.
The nightcap was a scoreless outing through eight-and-a-half innings despite the Huskies collecting seven hits and leaving 11 runners on base. Senior Jamie Graves (17-2) allowed seven hits but no runs before Spediacci relieved her in the middle of the ninth with two runners on before the run scored on a passed ball.
