PALO ALTO, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Jenny Topping knocked a three-run homer in the top of the first inning, and No. 1 Washington scored a run in each of the next three innings to put No. 8 Stanford away, 6-0, in the Huskies' Pac-10 season opener. UW improves to 37-3 and will meet No. 4 Cal Saturday at 2 p.m., while the Cardinal falls to 30-5 and 1-2 in league play.
Senior Rosie Leutzinger and junior Kim DePaul both singled before Topping sent her 18th ball of the season over the fence, this one just inside the left field foul pole.
In the second frame, senior Erin Helgeland led off with a double and moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Kelly Hauxhurst moved her to third and another wild pitch brought her home. Senior Jennifer Spediacci, who pitched five innings of the shutout, walked in the third inning and was sacrificed to second by senior Melissa Downs. Spediacci stole third before a single by junior Christie Rosenblad scored her.
Topping hit a long double in the fourth inning to score DePaul, who had earned a base on balls. Senior Jamie Graves relieved Spediacci (20-1) in the sixth inning.
