LOS ANGELES - Matt Gardner threw five solid innings of relief and the Washington baseball team came back from a three-run deficit to earn its first Pac-10 win of the season, beating UCLA 7-6 Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA's eight-game winning streak was broken with the loss.
Gardner (1-1) allowed four hits and two earned runs over five innings for the win. UCLA reliever Jon Brandt (3-4) allowed four runs in one and two-thirds innings for the loss. Washington's record improved to 8-12 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10. UCLA fell to 15-11, 1-1.
The Bruins scored the game's first run, taking 1-0 lead in the second. Nick Lyon singled to lead off the inning. He moved all the way to third when the Huskies botched a pick off attempt. Ryan Hamill's sacrifice fly sent him home with the UCLA run.
Lyon, a junior from Monroe, Wash., made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when he launched a solo home run, his sixth of the season, over the fence in right-center field.
With the bases loaded in the fifth, UW freshman Tila Reynolds singled up the middle to send home two runners and a third, Brent Robertson, scored on a throwing error by Bruin third baseman Randall Shelley to give Washington a 3-2 lead.
UCLA retook the lead in the sixth. After giving up a single to lead off the inning, UW starter Mike Bomar left the game with a sore shoulder. UCLA went on to score four runs in the inning. Garrett Atkins' sacrifice fly scored the first and a Bill Scott single gave the Bruins a lead. After a double steal plated another run, Scott scored on an error to give the Bruins a 6-3 lead.
Washington scored four runs in the seventh to take back the lead at 7-6. Todd Linden's two-run single highlighted the inning, which also included RBI hits from Matt Hollod and Jay Garthwaite.
The Huskies and Bruins close out the three-game series Monday at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies return to Seattle for their next four games. Wednesday at 6:30, the Dawgs take on Portland. Friday through Sunday, California comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game Pac-10 series.
