SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team built up a 9-7 lead and held on to beat defending NAIA champion Lewis-Clark State 9-6, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (14-17) jumped on the Warriors (34-8) from the start, scoring in each of the first four innings. In the first, freshman DH Jay Garthwaite delivered a two-run single to give the Huskies a 2-0 edge. Washington scored four in the second as Tila Reynolds doubled home two and Michael Done belted a two-run homer. After another run in the third made it 7-0, Washington scored a pair in the fourth on a Marc Rittenhouse solo homer and an RBI groundout by Garthwaite.
In the meantime, UW starter Mike Bomar had held L-C State to only one hit through four innings. But in the fifth, Bomar, who had missed two starts with a sore shoulder, ran into trouble as the Warriors plated four runs. Two scored on a double by Elliott Strankman and Trevor Brown homered to make it 4-2.
Freshman reliever Sean White (1-0) entered the game in the fifth in relief of Bomar, struck out Brandon O'Leary and picked up his first college win. White went on to work two and one-third innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Taylor Grant gave up a run in the ninth, but still earned his Pac-10-leading sixth save of the season.
L-C starter Mike Chavez (1-4) gave up six runs over two innings to suffer his first loss of the year.
For Washington, Rittenhouse reached base in each of his five plate appearances with a single, a homer, a hit by pitch and two walks. Reynolds had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two and Garthwaite finished the day with three RBI.
The Huskies travel to the Bay Area this weekend to take on Stanford Friday through Sunday. All three games will air live on KKOL AM-1300.
