STANFORD, Calif. - After winning a tight pitchers' duel against one of the nation's best last Friday, Washington ace Jeff Carlsen was narrowly out-dueled Friday night at Sunken Diamond as Stanford's Justin Wayne saw his team come back to win, 6-5, in a Pac-10 contest.
Last Friday, Carlsen beat Arizona ace Ben Diggins, rated the nation's No. 1 college prospect in the latest edition of Baseball America. In that same poll, Wayne was named the No. 2 prospect. Carlsen entered the game 5-1 on the year and 21-5 in his career while Wayne is now 9-1 this season and 25-2 for his career.
No. 5-ranked Stanford (27-9, 7-3 in the Pac-10) won the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Down 5-4, Craig Thompson led off with a double. After an Eric Bruntlett single put runners at first and third, Taylor Grant relieved Carlsen. Edmund Muth's single tied the game before a double play put a runner at second with two down. John Gall singled up the middle to send home Muth with the go-ahead run. Grant (1-3) took the loss for the Huskies (14-18, 3-7).
After both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings, the Huskies finally broke through with three runs in the fourth. With two out and runners at first and third, Todd Linden singled home Marc Rittenhouse with the opening tally. After Ed Erickson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Michael Done singled home two more.
But Stanford roared back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to tie the game. Jason Cooper's RBI double plated the first run before a single by Andy Topham and a triple from Thompson accounted for the other two.
Washington took the lead back in the top of the sixth, again with two out. Linden picked up another RBI with a single before Erickson made it 5-3 with a run-scoring single. Muth led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, his 11th of the year, to cut the UW lead to 5-4.
The Huskies and Cardinal continue the three-game series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. That game, as well as Sunday's finale, will air live on KKOL AM-1300.
