SEATTLE - California's Jon Shirley, who beat Washington with a two-hit shutout last season, worked six innings for a win Sunday at Husky Ballpark as the Bears beat the Huskies, 8-2, to take the three-game series, two games to one.
Shirley (1-3), who has been hampered by injuries this season, allowed two runs on five hits. He walked only one and struck out six. Andrew Sproul worked the final three innings, allowing only one hit, for the save, his first.
California improved to 15-17 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10. Washington fell to 10-15 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Mike Tonis, David Sark and Clint Hoover each hit home runs for the Bears. Washington had taken a 2-1 lead in the third inning when junior Marc Rittenhouse hit his seventh home run of the year, a two-run blast to center. But Sark's solo homer in the fourth tied the game and, that same inning, shortstop Jason Williams scored on an error to give Cal the lead it would never lose.
The Bears would go on to score in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Tonis led the Bears with three hits in five at bats. Washington freshman shortstop Tila Reynolds went 2-for-3 to pace the UW offense.
Husky starter Matt Gardner (1-2) worked five-plus innings, allowing six runs (four earned) for the loss.
Washington takes on Washington State in a pair of non-conference games this Tuesday and Wednesday before playing host to Arizona next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. California travels to face Texas in a non-league series next weekend.
