PULLMAN, Wash. - Despite giving up five runs in the first inning, the Washington baseball team, behind five solo home runs, came back and beat Washington State, 8-7, in a non-conference game Wednesday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Trailing 7-6 going into the ninth, Washington scored two unearned runs to take its first lead of the day. The Huskies hit five solo home runs on the day, including two by freshman Jay Garthwaite. In the ninth, with runners at first and third, Garthwaite hit a popup behind first base that was dropped by first baseman Ray Hattenburg, allowing the tying run to score. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, Jefferson Thiel drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout.
The Huskies improved to 12-15 overall and remained 2-4 in Pac-10 play. WSU's record fell to 14-19 on the season. The Cougars are also 2-4 in the league. The game did not count in the conference standings.
The Cougars took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch in the first inning, scoring five runs off of UW starter Zack Daniels, who only managed to get one out before leaving the game. Washington began to chip away at the WSU lead in the second when Garthwaite and Thiel each hit solo home runs. In the fourth, sophomore Michael Done added a third solo homer to make the score 5-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cougar third baseman Stefan Bailie led off the inning with a solo home run off of freshman Tyler Shepple, who had yet to allow a hit in three and two-thirds innings of relief.
In the sixth, Garthwaite belted his second home run of the day to lead off and freshman Tyler Davidson tripled home Thiel to make it 6-5. The Cougars added a run in the sixth to take a two-run edge before Davidson belted yet another solo shot. Davidson finished the day a single short of hitting for the cycle with a double, a triple, a homer and two RBI.
Freshman lefty Cam McCoy (1-0) worked two scoreless relief innings for his first career victory. Taylor Grant worked the ninth to pick up his fifth save. WSU reliever Zach Fisher fell to 2-2 with the loss.
The Huskies return to Husky Ballpark the weekend, when they'll play host to Arizona in a three-game Pac-10 series, Friday through Sunday.
