SEATTLE - Washington junior Matt Massingale threw his third straight complete game and senior Ed Erickson drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth to lead the Husky baseball team to a 5-4 win over Washington State Friday night in a Pac-10 game at Husky Ballpark.
Massingale, a right-hander from Kennewick, Wash., improved to 6-5 with his fifth complete game of the season. He struck out a career-high tying 10 and allowed three earned runs. Washington upped its overall record to 21-23 and its Pac-10 mark to 5-11. WSU fell to 16-29 overall and 4-15 in the conference.
With the scored tied at 4-4 with two outs and none on in the eighth, Husky shortstop Tila Reynolds drew a walk and Erickson belted a double off of WSU reliever Zach Fisher to right-center that scored Reynolds all the way from first to give Washington its winning margin. Fisher took the loss to fall to 2-4.
Erickson finished the day 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and two runs batted in. WSU center fielder Jordan Nilsen led the Cougars with a double, a home run and three RBI in three at bats.
Nilsen doubled to lead off the second and eventually scored on a Jon Baeder groundout to spot the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Erickson led off with his ninth home run of the season and the 40th of his career. Later that inning, DH Jay Garthwaite belted another solo shot, his ninth of the season. With that homer, he broke Erickson's UW freshman home run record, set in 1997.
Washington made it 3-1 in the fourth when junior second baseman Marc Rittenhouse led off with his team-leading 12 home run of the season. The Huskies tacked on another run in the seventh when Tyler Davidson's single plated Erickson.
WSU, however, came back to tie in the top of the eighth. After Jason Grove reached on an error and Steve Curran singled, Nilsen belted a high home run over the right-center field fence to knot the score at 8-8.
The Huskies and Cougars continue the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and finish up on Monday with a 2:00 p.m. game.
