SEATTLE - Junior Jeff Carlsen allowed only six hits and two runs in a complete-game effort to lead the Washington baseball team to a 3-2 win over Washington State Monday at Husky Ballpark as the Huskies handed the Cougars their fifth conference series sweep of the year.
With the win, the Huskies improved their record to the .500 mark for the first time this season as they're now 23-23 overall, 7-11 in conference. WSU, a loser of seven straight, fell to 16-32 overall, 4-17 in the league.
Carlsen (6-2) moved into a tie for second place on the UW career wins list, improving his three-year mark to 22-6. Both of the runs he allowed Monday came on one swing as WSU freshman catcher Jon Baeder belted a two-run homer in the fifth to put the Cougars in front, 2-1. Carlsen walked two and fanned eight.
Down by that 2-1 score, the Huskies posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to win. Freshman catcher Jefferson Thiel led off the inning with a solo homer, his fourth of the season and third in five games against WSU. Sophomore Ben Miller followed with a double and eventually scored on a single from freshman shortstop Tila Reynolds.
The Cougars had a chance to tie it in the eighth, but Shawn Stevenson was tagged out between third and home trying to score on a double steal. Washington, which posted 13 hits in the game, had runners thrown out on the bases five times.
Thiel finished the day a triple short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two runs. Reynolds, Tyler Davidson and Todd Linden each had two hits. WSU left fielder Evan Hecker was the only Cougar with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
WSU ace Matt O'Brien (7-4) allowed three earned runs and 13 hits over seven and one-third innings to take the loss.
The Huskies play host to Portland in non-conference action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. before making their first-ever trip to Arizona State this weekend. Tuesday's Portland game and all three ASU games will air live on KKOL AM-1300.
