SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team extended its season-long winning streak to four games Tuesday night, beating Portland, 8-3, in a non-conference game at rain-soaked Husky Ballpark. The game got underway 22 minutes late and was delayed by rain for 35 minutes between the sixth and seventh innings.
The Huskies bumped their record over .500 for the first time in 2000, improving to 24-23. Washington has won 10 of its last 13 games. Portland dropped to 22-25 with the loss.
Husky lefty Zack Daniels (4-1) worked the first six innings of the game, leaving after the rain delay, to pick up the win. Shawn Kohn picked up the save. He allowed three runs on eight hits. UP starter Kyle Corra (2-4) also worked six innings, giving up five earned runs in the loss.
Washington jumped out to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the first. Marc Rittenhouse led off with a single and scored on a Todd Linden single and Tila Reynolds walked and eventually crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Davidson.
With runners at first and second in the second inning, UW sophomore Matt Hollod hit a double to left, driving in both runners. Hollod came around to score as the wet ball slipped out of left fielder Gavin Hare's hand as he tried to throw the ball back into the infield.
Portland came back with one run in the third. In the fourth, UP first baseman Steve Jackson led off with a long home run to left field, his eighth of the season, cutting the Husky lead to 5-2. Later that inning, Nate Hare singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a Cody Gardner single.
The Huskies added another in the sixth and two runs in the seventh. Hollod finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI and Linden went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
The Huskies and Pilots close out the two-game series Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. This weekend, the Dawgs make their first-ever trip to Arizona State to play a three-game Pac-10 series.
