FRESNO, Calif. - After relinquishing another early lead, the Washington baseball team rallied for three runs in the seventh and hung on to beat Fresno State, 10-7, Sunday at Beiden Field to win the three-game series two games to one.
Washington improved its record to 5-2 on the season while Fresno State dropped to 5-8.
Tied at 7-7 through six innings, the Huskies took the lead for good with three runs in the seventh. Senior Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season. After a walk to Bryan Johnson (Ephrata), junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) belted his third double of the day to put runners at second and third. A single from Steve Ramsey (Redmond/Eastlake) plated a run before pinch hitter Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) drove in another with a sacrifice fly.
As they did in each of the first two games at Fresno, the Huskies posted multiple runs in the first inning, scoring four this time. Sunday, the Huskies were helped along by two Bulldog errors and a misplayed bunt that all led to runs. With runners at first and third, Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) reached on an error by third baseman Casey McGehee, allowing Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) to score from third.
After a second out, Garthwaite doubled to the right-center gap to send home two more runners. An error by first baseman Ben Fritz allowed Garthwaite to score the fourth run.
Washington added two more in the third when sophomore Mike Wagner (Woodinville) doubled to drive in Johnson and DH Nick Batkoski (Federal Way). Garthwaite's second double of the day drove home Davidson to give the UW a 7-2 lead.
Fresno State, which had scored single runs in the second and the fourth, both thanks to UW errors, got a solo homer from third baseman Casey McGehee in the fifth to close the gap to 7-3
In the sixth, with UW reliever Greg Colburn on in relief of starter Sean White, Fresno State batters hit home runs on three consecutive pitches. First baseman Ben Fritz's came with a man on first before McGehee and Tobey Riday-White followed to tie the score at 7-7.
Colburn (1-0) picked up the win and junior Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) got the last four outs to earn his third save. FSU reliever Sean Ruthven (0-1) suffered the loss.
Tuesday, the Huskies travel to face Portland in a 2:00 p.m. game at Pilot Stadium before they open the home schedule Friday evening vs. Utah in the first of a three-game series.
