PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) belted two home runs, but it wasn't enough as the Washington baseball team gave up nine runs in the second inning and fell short in a comeback attempt in an 11-10 loss to Portland Tuesday at Pilot Stadium.
For the fifth straight game, the Huskies (5-3) scored in the first inning, posting mulitiple runs for the fourth consecutive time. Washington knocked UP starter Kyle Corra (1-1) out of the game after he got only one out. Back-to-back home runs by Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) and Johnson highlighted the five-run first for the Huskies.
The Pilots (3-3), however, came back in a big way, scoring nine runs in the second inning. Travis Hanson led off with a homer to center and the first 11 Pilot batters reached base, the first nine scoring. Kory Casto's two-run single and Hanson's two-run double (in his second at bat of the inning) were the big hits.
Husky senior starter Randy Vanderplow (Coto de Caza, Calif.) suffered the loss. He was charged with all nine runs on nine hits in an inning-plus of work. UP reliever Steve Chamberlain (1-0) worked six and a third for the victory, allowing four runs (three earned) after coming on in the first inning.
Down 11-7, the Huskies mounted a late comeback. In the seventh, Johnson belted his second home run of the day with Davidson on to make it 11-9. In the eighth, freshman Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) led off with a homer, the first of his career, to cut the Pilots' lead to one.
Portland closer Eric Hull, however, left the bases loaded, striking out the final two hitters of the eighth. In the ninth, Hull walked one batter and hit another, but UW second baseman Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) lined out to diving second baseman Jared Mora to end the game. Hull picked up his first save.
Bryan Johnson finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI. Portland left fielder Matt Hollod, who played two seasons at Washington (1999-2000) went 4-for-5 with four singles to lead the Pilots.
The Huskies open the home season with a three-game series vs. Utah this weekend. Friday, first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games begin at 1:00 p.m.
