SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team gave up three runs in the first inning and were never able to come back as UC Riverside handed the Huskies a 6-4 loss to take the series, two games to one.
Riverside (15-7) used two infield hits and an error in the first to post their three runs. The Huskies (8-7) had a chance to get out of it with no runs across, but shortstop Tila Reynolds' throw to first on a two-out ground ball from Scott Powis was in the dirt, allowing the first run to score. Singles from Randy Blood and Rich Hofman plated two more runs.
The Huskies scored two in the second on RBI singles from Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) and John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson), but gave up three more in the fourth, thanks in large part to a two-run double from UCR leadoff hitter Brian Wahlbrink.
In the fifth, the UW closed the gap when Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) doubled and scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Bryan Johnson (Ephrata). Johnson scored all the way from first on Garthwaite's double.
UCR reliever Matt Thiessen (4-0), who came on with two out in the fifth, picked up the win, holding the Huskies scoreless the rest of the way. He fanned six over five and one third.
Husky starter Sean White (1-2), a junior for Mercer Island, gave up six runs (three earned) in the loss. Garthwaite and Otness both finished with two hits for the Huskies.
This week, the Huskies play host to Brigham Young in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark. Thursday and Friday, game time is 6:30 p.m. and Saturday's series finale starts at 1:00 p.m.
