SEATTLE - Despite arriving this morning to a field covered with two to three inches of snow, the Washington baseball team managed to play a doubleheader with UC Riverside Friday at Husky Ballpark, winning game one, 6-1, before falling in game two, 7-4.
Senior Shawn Kohn (Woodinville) went the distance in game one, earning the victory to improve to 4-0 on the year. Kohn allowed six hits, walked on and struck out six in his second complete game of the season. Through four starts, he's allowed only 17 hits, three runs and three walks in 30 innings.
The Huskies (8-6) scored all the run they'd need in game one in the second inning when freshman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) doubled home Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent- Meridian) and a single from catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) drove in Larsen to put the Huskies in front 2-0.
Hathaway finished game one 3-for-4 with two runs batted in while Larsen went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
UCR ace Chris Smith (4-2) suffered the game one loss, allowing five earned runs over six and one-third innings.
In game two, Riverside's Julio Fernandez (2-2) threw a complete game to pick up the win. He allowed four runs (two earned) on only five hits.
Tim Faulkner and Scott Powis each hit solo homers in game to for the Highlanders (14-7). Washington, down 7-2 entering the eighth, got a two-run blast from Garthwaite, his third of the season. In the ninth, the Huskies got the tying run to the plate after a single from Ben Johnson (Bellevue) and a walk to Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty), but Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) lined out sharply to center to end the game.
Reynolds, whose hitting streak reached 13 games after he went 1-for-2 in the opener, saw the streak broken in the nightcap as he went 0-for-3, reaching on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Freshman David Dowling (Kirkland/Juanita) threw five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) in his first career start and took the loss to go to 0-1.
The Huskies and Highlanders will not play Saturday, as originally scheduled, due to forecasts of bad weather. They will, however, play the series finale Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
