SEATTLE - Washington State ace Eddie Bonine threw eight strong innings to lead the Cougars to a 4-2 win over Washington in a Pac-10 Conference baseball game Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Bonine, a junior college transfer from Glendale, Ariz., allowed only five hits and two unearned runs while striking 10 to improve to 6-4 on the season. Brandon Hundt, the Cougars' scheduled starter for Saturday, came on in relief of Billy Gorrell in the ninth after Gorrell had walked two Huskies. Hundt got a groundout and then hit a batter to load the bases, but got Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) to ground out to end the game and earn his third save.
Husky ace Shawn Kohn (Woodinville) suffered his second loss of the season despite throwing a complete game. Kohn (6-2) gave up 11 hits and four runs while allowing three walks (two of them intentional) with four strikeouts. The UW fell to 13-17-1 overall, 1-3 in the Pac-10.
The Cougars (14-18, 2-5) struck first, getting on the scoreboard with one run in the second. Third baseman Jeff LaRue singled to lead off. After Wes Falkenborg was hit by a pitch, Steve Mortimer loaded the bases with none out on a bunt single. The WSU run scored when catcher Jon Baeder grounded into a double play to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Cougars again loaded the bases with no outs. After Kohn got Bookie Gates to pop out, LaRue blooped a double to left field to drive in Collin Henderson and Evan Hecker. Kohn, however, got two more popouts to end the threat with WSU in front, 3-0.
The Huskies didn't mount their first real threat until the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) led off with an infield single and eventually moved to third on a pair of groundouts. After a walk to catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) put runners at first and third, pinch hitter Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) had his grounder stopped by diving WSU first baseman Steve Mortimer, who managed to get up in time to toss to Bonine for the out at first.
WSU tacked on a fourth run in the eighth when Justin Hart singled and scored on a single from Falkenborg. Henderson finished the day with three hits, including a double, to pace the Cougar offense. LaRue was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Washington broke up Bonine's shutout bid by scoring two unearned runs in the eighth. After Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) reached on an error to lead off the inning, Reynolds bunted his way aboard. After a flyout moved Jacobson to third, he scored on a groundout from Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake). Reynolds came around when Davidson slapped a single to left.
The Huskies and Cougars play game two of the series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and will be shown on Fox Sports at 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
