SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team used a bases-loaded balk and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to take a lead and hung on to beat Washington State, 11-7, in the final game of a three-game Pac-10 series Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies won the three-game series two games to one to improve to 15-17-1 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10. With two earlier non-league wins over WSU, Washington will finish the season having taken four of five from its cross-state rival.
Due to rain, the game got underway about 55 minutes late. Conditions remained far from ideal, however, in the early going as both teams took advantage of wind and wetness to score runs in the first couple of innings.
In the first, Justin Hart tripled to score a run and then scored on a sacrifice fly to give WSU a 2-0 lead. The Huskies came back in the bottom of the inning when a bases-loaded double-play grounder from Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) plated one run and Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) scored on a single from Tyler Davidson.
WSU tacked on another pair in the second on another sacrifice fly and run-scoring double from Evan Hecker. The Huskies, however, scored three in the second to take a 5-4 lead. Catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) singled home a run before Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) doubled to drive in two more.
After neither team scored in the third and fourth innings, WSU took the lead back with three runs in the fifth. A bases-loaded single from DH Wes Falkenborg drove in a pair of runs before a Bookie Gates groundout plated Jeff LaRue to put the Cougars in front, 7-5.
The Huskies got a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Reynolds took back the lead in the seventh. A bases-loaded balk by WSU starter Brandon Hundt sent home Davidson with the tying run and, after re-loading the bases, Hundt walked Jacobson to send in the go- ahead run. Washington salted the game away with three more in the eighth.
Hundt (4-3) suffered the loss as WSU fell to 14-20 overall and 2-7 in the Pac-10. Hundt allowed eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits over six and two-thirds. UW freshman reliever David Dowling (Kirkland/Juanita) earned his first college victory to improve to 1-3. The lefty retired the first seven men he faced in relief of starter Clay Johnson (Elma).
The Huskies take on Lewis-Clark State Tuesday evening before hosting No. 2 Stanford next Friday through Sunday in a three-game Pac-10 series. Tuesday's game will air live on KKNW AM-1150, though none of the Stanford games will air on radio.
