COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Washington baseball team's record dropped below .500 for the first time this season Friday night as Missouri out-lasted the Huskies for an 11-9 win in a non-conference game at Taylor Stadium.
The Huskies, losers of five straight, fell to 12-13-1 on the season. Freshman starter David Dowling (Kirkland/Juanita) fell to 0-3 with the loss, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) over six innings of work. Missouri freshman Justin James (1-1) picked up his first college victory, surrendering six runs over six innings in the start.
Each team scored in its half of the first inning. Husky left fielder Mike Wagner (Woodinville) put the Huskies on the scoreboard when his bases-loaded single gave Washington a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Jayce Tingler singled and eventually scored on a ground ball to cut the UW lead to 2-1.
The Huskies added two more in the second when catcher Ben Johnson (Bellevue) walked, stole second and scored on a single from Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen). Isaacson stole second and came around when shorstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) blooped a double down the right field line, giving the Huskies a 4-1 edge.
Missouri (12-16) came back with two more in the second when Luke Cassis' triple drove in Chris Julo and Ryan Rothford. In the third, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs, but could manage only a run on a single from Julo as Rothford grounded into a double play to end the inning with the score tied at 4-4.
Washington went back on top with two runs in the fifth. Reynolds and Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) singled to open the inning and scored when freshman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) singled up the middle.
But Missouri responded quickly again, as the first four batters in the fifth reached base and scored. The Tigers took the lead when Julo scored on a groundout and made it 8-6 when Brent Lacy scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Jayce Tingler. Missouri made it 10-6 when two runs scored on Julo's high pop to center, which dropped between three Husky defenders.
Washington drew back to within one run with three in the seventh. Reynolds tripled and scored on a single from Done. After Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) walked, Larsen singled to drive home Done. A hit batter loaded the bases for Bryan Johnson (Ephrata), who's sacrifice fly sent home Jacobson to cut Missouri's lead to 10-9.
Reynolds finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and a triple to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. The junior shortstop has hit safely in 25 of 26 games this season. Done also had three hits while Larsen, Isaacson and Ben Johnson added two each for the Huskies.
The Huskies and Tigers will go at it again tomorrow at 2 p.m. CST (noon PST). Live video and audio coverage of the games are available at www.gohuskies.com, courtesy of mutigers.com.
