CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior third baseman Michael Done hit two home runs and Aaron Hathaway and Tyler Davidson added one homer each as the Washington baseball team handed Oregon State its fifth straight loss with a 13-3 win Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
The Huskies (13-7 in the Pac-10, 28-23-1 overall) took over sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 standings, a half-game back of USC, which plays tonight at fourth- place Arizona State. Stanford, which entered the day tied with the Huskies for second place, lost at UCLA 9-4 to drop into third place, a half-game ahead of ASU in fourth.
The win also assured the Huskies of an above-.500 record in league play for the first time since the Northern and Southern Divisions merged in 1999. Oregon State fell to 9-11 in the league, 30-20 overall.
Washington scored 11 of its 13 runs with two outs and nine of the 13 came on the four home runs. Junior starter Sean White (Mercer Island) earned the victory to improve to 5-2 on the year, allowing three runs over seven and two-thirds innings. He faced only three hitters each in innings four through seven, walking one but getting a double play.
Oregon State catcher Wick Udy got the Beavers on the scoreboard in the second inning when he led off with his second homer of the year over the fence in right field. After the home run, the Beavers loaded the bases with no outs. White only gave up one more run, however, getting a popout, a sacrifice fly and a strikeout to end the inning with OSU in front, 2-0.
With nobody on and two out in the third, the Huskies strung together a two-run rally. A walk and a single put runners at first and second for shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty), who singled through the middle to drive in the Huskies' first run. Freshman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) followed with another single to tie the game at 2-2.
Washington went ahead 4-2 with two in the fourth. Hathaway, a freshman from Vancouver (Columbia River) doubled to lead off and, after an out, came around to score when Done (Littleton, Colo.) pulled a ball down the right field line for a home run.
The sixth inning started as a near-repeat of the fourth. Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) led off with double to left and, after two outs and after fouling off several two-strike pitches, Done lofted a ball high over the right-field fence for his second two-run homer of the game and his 10th round-tripper of the season.
After the homer, John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) walked and Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) singled. After OSU reliever Don Stykel balked, UW freshman Taylor Johnson singled to right field to drive in both runners, stretching the Huskies' lead to 8-2. In the seventh, Davidson singled and Hathaway homered to left for his fourth of the season and second of the weekend as Washington's lead increased to 10-2.
In the eighth, Davidson blasted a pitch deep over the fence in left field for a three-run homer, his 12th of the season. Davidson finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Done was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Hathaway went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Taylor Johnson went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
OSU junior starter Stephen Copeland (5-3) threw five and two-thirds innings for the loss. He allowed eight runs on nine hits while striking out two.
The Huskies go for the series sweep Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. While there's no Seattle-area radio coverage of the game, fans can listen to the Oregon State broadcast over the internet at www.osubeavers.com.
