SEATTLE - Senior Shawn Kohn tied the Washington school record for wins in a season and Michael Done belted a grand slam, leading the Husky baseball team to a 7-3 win over Arizona Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a season-ending three-game series.
The win kept the Huskies (14-8 Pac-10, 29-24-1 overall) in a tie for second place in the Pac-10 Conference. Washington is tied with Stanford, a winner over Washington State Friday night, a half-game back of USC, which was tied 4-4 in the 11th inning with UCLA late Friday evening.
Kohn, a righty from Woodinville, tied the Husky single-season victories record, improving to 11-4 on the season. He now shares the mark with Jake Kringen, who posted 11 wins in 1997. Kohn went the distance for the eighth time this season, marking the most complete games by a UW pitcher since 1986. He allowed three runs on seven hits while walking one and fanning four.
Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, Washington got the tying and go-ahead runs when junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) belted his 15th home run of the year over the center field fence with Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) on board.
The Huskies put the game away with five runs in the eighth. After freshman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) was intentionally walked, junior Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) doubled to the gap in right-center to drive in Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) from second.
After Garthwaite was intentionally walked to load the bases, Done, a senior from Littleton, Colo., blasted a grand slam to right for his 11th home run of the season.
Kohn was perfect through the first four and one-third innings before allowing a clean single to left field by Arizona DH Richard Mercado. Nothing came of that hit, but in the sixth, the Wildcats got on the scoreboard when Clayton Bried singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from Brian Anderson.
The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth. Moises Duran doubled and scored on a double from catcher Chris Cunningham. Cunningham came home on a Pat Reilly single.
UA starter Sean Rierson (7-5) suffered the loss for Arizona (8-14 Pac-10, 30-23 overall). Rierson allowed five runs on nine hits over seven and one-third innings.
The Huskies and Wildcats continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's regular-season finale also starts at 1:00 p.m.
