SAN DIEGO - After surrendering leads of two and three runs, the 23rd-ranked Washington baseball team rallied to score one run in the ninth and four more in the 10th to beat the University of San Diego, 10-6, Saturday at Cunningham Stadium.
Washington (1-1) scored a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 6-6 when DH Tyler Mach reached on an error and scored on a double from shortstop Brent Lillibridge. In the ninth, with two runners aboard thanks to walks, senior Greg Isaacson doubled to the gap in right-center to send home Taylor Johnson and Matt Tucker to break the tie. Catcher Aaron Hathaway later tripled to drive in two more.
All-America reliever Will Fenton (1-0) threw two scoreless innings for the win. Sean Warlop (0-1) gave up the two runs in the 10th to suffer the loss for USD (4-7).
For the second straight day, the Huskies got a solo homer in the first inning as, with one out, senior third baseman John Otness lined a shot down the left-field line to stake the UW to a 1-0 edge. Otness finished the day 4-for-6 In the third, Washington doubled its lead to 2-0 when Mach, a true freshman from Kentlake High, belted a home run on the first pitch of his first college at bat.
San Diego, held scoreless through the first four innings by Husky freshman starter Tim Lincecum, finally broke through to tie score with two runs in the fifth. With one out, Lincecum walked Freddy Sandoval and Josh Hansen and then threw a wild pitch to put runners at second and third. A sacrifice fly from Keoni Ruth drove in one run and a single from Jordan Abruzzo sent home Hansen to tie it up at 2-2.
The following inning, Washington posted three runs to move back in front. Singles from Lillibridge and John Otness opened the inning and chased USD starter Nate Boman. Lillibridge scored from third on a fielder's choice forceout from Hathaway, who stole second and move to third on an error before scoring on a Kyle Larsen single. Eventually, three walks drove home Larsen, giving the UW a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of that same inning, USD tied it back up with three runs of their own. Center fielder Tom Caple lined a two-run homer down the left-field line off of Husky reliever David Dowling, who then walked a batter and gave up a single before being replaced by Josh Conover with no outs and runners at first and second. Conover gave up a single to load the bases, then notched a strikeout before a sacrifice fly from Abruzzo tied it.
USD took its first lead of the game in the seventh, moving in front, 6-5. With one down and runners at the corners, Joey Prast grounded hard to third for what looked like and inning-ending double play, but after the out at second, Husky first baseman Kyle Larsen dropped the throw to first, allowing Trevor Pike to score from third. It was only the third error ever for Larsen, a third- year starter at first.
The Huskies and Toreros close out the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
