SEATTLE - Junior first baseman Kyle Larsen's grand slam highlighted a six-run first inning and freshman Tim Lincecum struck out 15 batters in six innings as the Washington baseball team cruised to a 10- 1 win over Loyola Marymount Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a three-game series.
Loyola Marymount (11-5) saw its six-game winning streak come to and end. Washington improved to 8- 4-1 on the year.
Lincecum, who fanned 11 batters over six innings in a win over Missouri last weekend, held the Lions hitless through the first five innings. After allowing only three balls to be put in play through five, he ran into trouble in the sixth. After a hit batter and walk broke a streak of 13 straight batters retired, Lincecum surrendered his first hit of the night on a liner to left from Joe Frazee.
With the bases loaded, Lincecum walked Jonathan Higashi to force in a run, but then came back to strike out the next three LMU batters in order.
Lincecum, a 5-foot-11 righty from Renton's Liberty High, finished the game having allowed the one run on one hit and four walks over six innings. He struck out three in an inning three times and fanned two in the three other innings he threw. Only four LMU batters put the ball in play.
Washington jumped on LMU ace Will Quaglieri in the first, scoring six runs. The Huskies loaded the bases on singles from Brent Lillibridge and Greg Isaacson and a walk to Aaron Hathaway. After a fielder's choice groundout from Matt Lane drove in one, Zach Clem walked to load the bases again. Larsen followed with a grand slam on a hard line drive to right, his first homer of the year.
On the next offering from Quaglieri, senior third baseman John Otness homered to left, his fourth of the season, to stake Washington with a 6-0 lead.
In the fourth, Lillibridge walked to lead off and Isaacson, the Huskies' senior second baseman, knocked his second homer of the season. After an out, Lane doubled and Clem, a sophomore from Burlington, belted his second home run of the year to straight away center, increasing the UW lead to 10-0.
Quaglieri, who entered the game with a 1.04 ERA having allowed only three earned runs in 26 innings, suffered the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season.
Frazee finished the game with both of Loyola Marymount's two hits. Washington sophomore reliever Matt Kasser threw the final three innings of the game to record a save, his first.
Isaacson led the Huskies, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Larsen went 2-for-3 with four batted in.
The Huskies and Lions continue the three-game series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
