Huskies Take Series With 7-2 Win At USC

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Elliott Cribby, making his second college start, allowed only one earned run over six and one-third innings and Zach Clem finished a single short of hitting for the cycle while driving in three runs as the Washington baseball team beat 22nd-ranked USC, 7-2, Sunday at Dedeaux Field.
The win gave the Huskies (27-15 overall, 6-6 in the Pac-10) a 2-1 series win over the Trojans (23-18, 9-6). Halfway through the 24-game conference season, the Huskies will play nine of their remaining 12 Pac-10 games at Husky Ballpark.
Cribby, a right-hander from Lake Washington High, had been the Huskies' closer before earning his first start last Monday at Portland. Sunday, he improved to 6-3 on the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on three singles, two walks and one strikeout over six and one-third innings.
Washington took the early lead in the top of the first when Clem hit a two-out solo homer, his league-leading 17th of the season.
Clem was back at it again in the third. After a single from Jake Rife and a double from Matt Hague put runners at second and third with no outs, Clem belted a triple to right- center, driving in two more to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
With John Dunn on in relief of starter Ryan Cook (4-4), Curt Rindal lined a single to center to drive in Clem. After another single from Matt Lane and a Ryan Anderson sacrifice bunt, Matt Stevens made it 5-0 when his groundout allowed Rindal to cross the plate.
USC scored its first run without benefit of a hit in the bottom of the third. Lucas Duda led off with a fly ball to left that Clem dropped for a two-base error. On the second of two groundouts to second that followed, Duda scored to cut the Huskies' lead to 5-1.
The Trojans didn't manage their first hit until, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Duda dumped a blooper to left. However, as Duda tried to stretch the single, Clem threw him out at second base to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, Rindal, the Huskies' first baseman from Mount Vernon, notched his third single and second RBI of the afternoon, driving in Hague, who doubled for the second time, to increase the lead to 6-1.
USC scored a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but the Huskies got that run back on Stevens' 12th homer of the year in the eighth. Clem led off the ninth with a double and finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Rindal went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Next up for the Huskies is a non-conference game vs. Saint Martin's Tuesday evening at Husky Ballpark. Next Friday through Sunday, Arizona visits Seattle for a three-game, Pac-10 Conference series.
