Clem Belts Two Homers In 11-9 Win

SEATTLE - Senior Zach Clem hit two home runs and drove in five as the Washington baseball team held off Saint Martin's for an 11-9 win Tuesday evening at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies improved to 28-15 with the victory while the Division II Saints dropped to 13-23 on the year.
With 19 home runs on the season with 19 games remaining in the regular seson, Clem is now only three shy of the Husky record of 22, set by Chad Boudon in 2003. With 40 career homers, he's only two behind Ed Erickson's all-time mark of 42 (1997-2000). Clem's 19 home runs leads the Pac-10 and are second-most in the nation. He finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI.
The UW got off to a quick start as leadoff hitter Ryan Anderson doubled to open the bottom of the first. He scored on a Clem single to give the Huskies an early 1-0 advantage.
However, after going down in order the first two innings, Saint Martin's took the lead with three runs in the third. Ezzard Wilkins singled to lead off. After stealing seconda nd moving to third on a flyout, he scored on a single from Maki Smith. Ryan Brilhante followed with an infield single to third base. On the play, Smith tried to take third on the throw to first base. A throw back to third to try and get him there was errant however, allowing him to score. Nate Baker then singled to drive in Brilhante, giving the visitors a 3-1 lead.
In bottom of the third, the Huskies answered back thanks to more from Anderson and Clem. After Anderson knocked his second double of the game to leadoff, Clem launched a towering home run to left-center to tie the game.
In the fifth, former Husky and current Saints DH Ty Kuehl, who spent the 2004 season on the Washington roster, belted his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to put Saint Martin's back on top, 4-3.
Still in the fifth, the Saints loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Baker followed with a slow roller up the first base line. When Husky reliever Nick Haughian went to retrieve the ball and place a tag on Baker, he left the ball on the ground for an error that allowed one run to score. Adam Siler followed with a sacrifice fly to give SMU a 6-3 advantage.
In the fifth, Clem drew the Huskies back to within a run. After Danny Cox knocked a one-out double, Clem went the other way with a homer to right field.
The following inning, an RBI groundout from Kuehl put the SMU lead to 7-5. However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies took advantage of three Saints errors to score four runs to take the lead for good. Two runs scored on two separate errors from catcher Richard O'Neill and Curt Rindal drove in two more with a double to give put the Huskies on top, 9-7. In the seventh, Cox drove in two more with a two-out single.
The Saints added two runs in the ninth on RBI doubles from Baker and Siler.
Haughian (2-1), who allowed one run in one and two-thirds innings of relief, picked up the victory while SMU reliever Brett Efaw (2-3) suffered the loss.
The Huskies open the second half of the Pac-10 schedule this weekend when Arizona comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
