TUCSON, Ariz.-- The 11th-ranked Washington softball team pounded eight hits Friday night to upset third-ranked and Pac-10 Champion Arizona in front of 1,983 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium. The win lifts the Huskies to 35-15 on the season and 12-8 in the Pac-10, marking its most conference victories since the 2002 season when UW finished 13-8. The Wildcats dip to 38-12-1 overall and 14-5-1 in the Pac-10.
The win marks Washington's first against Arizona since 2004 and snapped an eight-game Wildcat win streak against the Huskies.
Sophomore Danielle Lawrie (24-9) earned the victory as she held Arizona to one run on five hits. Her six strikeouts moved her into third on the UW all-time career list with 759 Ks. Lawrie also brought her season total to 372 strikeouts and is six Ks away from tying her own school record set last season.
Taryne Mowatt (30-10) took the loss as she allowed two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.
Lawrie helped her own cause in the second inning, belting her eighth home run of the season over the right field wall to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
Washington tacked on another run in the third inning on one hit and three walks to chase Mowatt from the circle. Junior All-American Ashley Charters sparked the inning with a single through the left side before Mowatt walked three consecutive batters to bring in a run and give UW the 2-0 advantage. Freshman Sarah Akamine took over in the circle and got a fielder's choice and a line out to get out of the jam.
The Wildcats threatened in the third loading the bases with two out on a triple by Chelsie Mesa, an intentional walk to Kristie Fox and a hit-by-pitch vs. Jenae Leles but a foul out to right field got the Huskies out of the inning unscathed.
Arizona finally broke through in the fifth inning with a solo home run by Mesa that just cleared the right field wall to cut Washington's lead to 2-1.
The Huskies surged ahead in the sixth, stringing three two-out hits together to score three runs. Ashlyn Watson got the rally going with a single off the centerfield wall, followed by a high chopper by Nicole Moojen that bounced over the third baseman. Charters then blasted her seventh home run of the season with a towering fly ball over the right field fence to extend the Huskies' lead to 5-1, which stuck for the final score.
Charters finished the day 4-for-4 with three singles and a home run. It marked her 20th multi-hit game of the season and first game with four hits.
Washington closes out the regular season Saturday against Arizona at 1 p.m.
