SEATTLE - Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann was outstanding in goal and Kate Deines put the penalty kick in the back of the net in the first half as the UW women's soccer team (9-3-1) upset No. 25 Arizona State (7-3-2) at Husky Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The Huskies improve to a perfect 2-0 in Pac-10 play while the Sun Devils drop to 1-1.
Deines, a junior from Issaquah, Wash., netted her team-high seventh goal in the 14th minute. Senior Jane Mitchell (San Diego, Calif.) took the ball away from an Arizona State defender at midfield to start the play. Senior McKenna Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) then sent a pass into the right side of the box to junior Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.) where she was fouled by Kaitlyn Pavlovich. Deines then took the penalty kick as she sent the ball on the ground on the left side passed Alyssa Gilmore. It was the third PK goal for Deines of the season.
"We were fortunate enough to get the call," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We were telling Alex Webber to be more aggressive toward the goal and she spun her defend and got the PK call and Kate buried it like she has this year."
Arizona State took 19 shots in the game, and seven on goal, but all were saved by LaFontaine-Kussmann. The Sun Devils had some great headers from Devin Marshall and Karin Volpe throughout the entire game and had two shots hit the post. Marshall led the team with eight total shot and three on goal.
"Jorde had a lot of great saves," said Gallimore. "She did what she does best which is being really sure with her hands. ASU sent a ton of dangerous balls in and had a lot of restarts and both teams defensively did what they need to do to dodge bullets."
The Huskies fired six shots, just two on goal, the second also coming from Deines with 16 minutes left in the game, but it was saved by Gilmore.
LaFontaine-Kussmann improves to 5-3-1 in goal while Gilmore falls to 7-2-2. ASU won the corner kicks 9-8.
The Huskies head to California for Pac-10 play next weekend, taking on nationally ranked Cal on Oct. 15 and then facing the Stanford Cardinal on Oct. 17.
"Every game we want to keep ourselves in contention," Gallimore added. "We want to win the Pac-10 and we have to go to California next week against two of the top teams in the conference and get results down there."
