Huskies Continue To Learn In Palm Springs

MISSION HILLS, Calif. - The Husky women's tennis team was very competitive for the second straight day at the Palm Springs Classic, but it did not translate into wins, although the Dawgs were close on all courts.
Nearly scoring the biggest win was senior Samantha Smith, who was up a set on 45th-ranked Pamela Montez of UCLA, and pushed the second set into a tiebreak, but Montez got the breaker and then used the momentum to take the match, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic had a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Pepperdine's Arianna Colffer, a two-time WCC First Team selection. The score was identical for freshman Natali Coronel, who came up short against USC's Gabriella DeSimone. Freshman Julija Lukac went against Kate Fuller of Georgia, an All-American in doubles last year, with Fuller earning a 6-4, 6-3 win.
"On paper it does not look like we had a good day, but our competition here has been against teams that are ranked higher than us so the freshman are getting a good dose of what our competition is going to be," said Head Coach Jill Hultquist. "They did not lose to people that they should not have lost to, but they did have their chances, and they are not yet closing out some of the big points like they should."
