BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Washington baseball team held Cal State Bakersfield scoreless after the third inning, but couldn't complete a comeback and fell to the Roadrunners, 5-4, Friday at Hardt Field.
Washington (1-3) fell behind, 5-1, after three innings. The Huskies scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to draw within a run, but never drew even. Bakersfield improved to 3-2 on the season.
UW starter Jacob Clem (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) over six innings. CSUB's Tommy Hoenshell (1-1) went eight innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits to earn the win. Martin Medina pitched the ninth for a save.
The Roadrunners scored the game's first runs in the second inning. With two runners aboard, shortstop Tyler Shryock doubled to the gap in left-center field, driving in a pair to give Bakersfield a 2-0 lead.
Washington cut that lead in half with a run in the third. With two outs, Brendan Gardner-Young was hit by a pitch and Brian Wolfe singled to put runners at the corners. Chase Anselment the reached on an infield single to allow Gardner-Young to score.
Bakersfield, however, answered with three more in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Ryan McIntyre singled home two and then eventually scored on a double from Mick Gaston, stretching the lead to 5-1.
In the fifth, Gardner-Young and Anselment combined for the Huskies' second run as Gardner-Young reached on a one-out single, took second on a bunt and then scored when Anselment drove a single up the middle. Anselment then came in to score when Jacob Lamb's single was mishandled by the Bakersfield right fielder, cutting the gap to 5-3.
In the sixth, the Huskies drew to within a run at 5-4. After singles from Troy Scott and Eric Peterson put runners at first and third, Scott scored on a double-play groundout.
Clem didn't allow a hit and faced the minimum over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He left in the seventh after allowing a leadoff single.
Husky freshman reliever Jeff Brigham, who came on with two on and one out in the seventh, struck out two in his one and two-thirds innings of hitless relief.
The Huskies and Roadrunners continue the three-game series with 1:00 p.m. games Saturday and Sunday.
