BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Washington baseball team wrapped up its season-opening, six-game road stretch by being swept in a doubleheader by Cal State Bakersfield, 11-1 and 7-4, Sunday at Hardt Field.
The Huskies (1-5) and Roadrunners (5-2) played a doubleheader after Saturday's scheduled game was postponed due to poor field conditions.
Husky shortstop Jacob Lamb went 4-for-5 in the nightcap as the Huskies rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning.
In the opener, CSU Bakersfield starter Jonathan Montoya (1-1) went the distance for the victory, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six. Husky starter Michael Garber (0-2) took the loss, surrendering seven runs over three and two-thirds innnings.
DC Legg and Martin Medina both finished game one 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead CSUB. Senior Troy Scott was 2-for-4 with a solo homer for Washington.
The Roadrunners grabbed the early lead with a two-out rally in the first. With two down and a runner at second base, Medina singled to open the scoring. Oscar Sanay and Mick Gaston followed with run-scoring singles to stake CSUB to a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Bakersfield scored a fourth run, again with two outs, as Kevin Younger singled and scored on a double from catcher Jeremy Rodriguez, making it a 4-0 score.
In the fourth, the Roadrunners notched three more two-out runs as Younger singled to drive in DC Legg and, after a walk, Medina's double sent home two more, increasing the lead to 7-0.
CSUB added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth before the Huskies scored their first run on a one-out solo homer from Scott, his first of the season.
In game two, Bakersfield scored the game's first run in the third when Legg singled and eventually scored on an error. The following inning, the Roadrunners added two more in the fourth as Ryan McIntyre drove in one with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Sanay drove in a fourth run with a single in the fifth.
Washington broke through in the seventh inning. After freshman Cody Stephens doubled and Brendan Gardner-Young walked to begin the inning, Medina, the CSUB closer came on in place of starter Mike McCarthy. After a strikeout, a Jacob Lamb single loaded the bases.
Medina got a fly ball for the second out and looked to be off the hook on a grounder from Scott, but an error at third base allowed two runs to score and kept the inning alive. Eric Peterson singled to drive in a third and Caleb Brown tied the game with a single to left.
However, Bakersfield went back on top in the bottom of the seventh. After two straight singles to open the inning, Medina helped his own cause by singling to drive in the go-ahead run. A sacrifice fly made it a 6-4 Roadrunners lead.
Andrew Letourneau's RBI single added a seventh run for the Roadrunners in the eighth.
Medina (1-0), who gave up two unearned runs and struck out six in his three innings of relief, picked up the victory. Freshman Tyler Kane (0-1), who pitched one and a third in relief, suffered the loss.
Washington begins a seven-game home stand later this week with the first of three games vs. BYU Thursday at 5:00 p.m. The Huskies also host the Cougars Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
