Honed In Hughes Leads Huskies

BANDON, Ore. - Earlier this week, Husky head coach Matt Thurmond had UW sophomores Charlie Hughes and Chris Williams play a round of golf not using their for full arsenal of clubs. The purpose was to show them that they had more shots in their bag of tricks than they might expect.
Both shot in the 60s that day.
On Friday, it obviously paid huge dividends at Bandon Golf Course -- especially for Hughes.
The sophomore from Maple Ridge, B.C. shot a 9-under 135 in Friday's 36-hole, two round opener at the par-72, 6,798-yard resort course and holds a seven-stroke advantage over the field.
"Charlie was unbelievable today," said Thurmond. "To play 36 holes on a challenging course with 20-plus mile per hour winds without making a bogey until your 34th hole is remarkable."
Hughes shot a bogey-free 67 in the morning round and followed that up with a 68 in the afternoon.
He was largely responsible for Washington's eight-stroke lead that they took into the clubhouse after Friday's grueling day. Washington combined to shoot 10-under 566 with a 7-under 281 in the morning, followed by a 3-under 285.
Fourth-ranked Florida is at -2 to be the closest team to the No. 27 Huskies. Oregon is third at +5.
Hughes was not alone in leading UW to their charge to the top of the leaderboard. Williams, his partner in crime on and off the course, is tied for second after going into the clubhouse at -2. Williams followed up a 2-under 70 in the morning with an even-par 72 in the afternoon.
Senior Kevin Spooner is only a stroke behind Williams at -1. He shot a 71 and 72 and is tied for fourth.
Fellow senior Tze Huang Choo is tied for 15th at +2. He shot a pair of 73's.
"Our seniors played with real steadiness today. I love that our highest counting score of the day was 73," said Thurmond. "This was our best day of the year."
Freshman Cory McElyea shot a 78-79 and is tied for 66th.
A pair of Huskies are also competing as individuals at the tournament. Larry Iverson is tied for 31st at +5, while Trevor Simsby is tied for 66th at +13.
Tomorrow's final round is a shotgun start beginning at 8:00 a.m.
