SEATTLE - Senior Jacob Clem threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout, striking out a career-high eight, as the Washington baseball team grinded out a 1-0 win over Dallas Baptist Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Clem (1-2), a fifth-year righty from Burlington, gave up a pair of singles and walked only two. He retired the side in order in six of nine innings and seven of his eight strikeouts came on called third strikes. It was only Clem's fifth career start as, prior to this season, he'd been exclusively a reliever.
Dallas Baptist starter Brandon Williamson (2-1) also went the distance in the loss. He gave up the one run on seven hits. Williamson didn't walk a batter and struck out five.
The Huskies improved to 3-10 with the win while DBU fell to 10-6.
Washington scored the only run of the game in the second inning. Chase Anselment doubled and B.K. Santy singled to put runners at the corners. Freshmen Will Sparks then stroked a single to left, scoring Anselment to give the UW a 1-0 lead.
Santy finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and was the only player on either side with more than one hit.
With final exams on tap this coming week, the Huskies won't return to the field until opening a three-game series next Friday at No. 6 Cal State Fullerton.
