SEATTLE - A seven-run fourth inning led 13th-ranked Cal State Fullerton to an 11-3 win over the Washington baseball team in the opening game of a three-game series Friday night at Goodwin Field.
Titans ace Noe Ramirez (3-2) picked up the victory, striking out 11 Huskies in six-plus innings of work. He allowed three runs on eight hits and didn't walk a batter.
Troy Scott and Joe Meggs each had two hits to lead the Washington batting order. Freshman Willy Reel contributed two runs batted in for the Huskies.
Fullerton (9-7), which broke a four-game losing streak with the win, struck for a run in the first. After two quick outs, Nick Ramirez singled, took second on a wild pitch and then scored on a double from Tyler Pill, giving the Titans the early, 1-0 lead. In the second, Ivory Thomas opened the inning with a single and, after two outs and a hit batter, scored from third on an error, making it 2-0.
Washington (3-11) got on the board in the third. After Scott led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single from Ty Afenir, he scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Spencer Rogers, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Fullerton stretched the lead in the fourth, scoring seven runs. After Thomas led off with a triple, Jared Deacon was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. A passed ball scored Thomas and, after a bunt, Deacon scored on a Richy Pedroza single. Anthony Trajano followed with a double to left, plating Pedroza and, after a walk, Pill tripled to right, sending in a pair. Michael Lorenzen then hit the third triple of the inning to send home Pill and end freshman starter Austin Voth's outing. A sacrifice fly accounted for the seventh run of the fourth.
After the Titans scored a 10th run in the fifth, Washington got a pair of runs back in the seventh inning. Brian Wolfe and Scott led off the inning with singles. Reel then knocked a double to right, scoring both to cut the lead to 10-3.
Voth (1-2) suffered the loss for Washington, allowing eight earned runs over three and one-third innings. Sophomore Terik Gofinch gave up just one unearned run on two hits over three innings in relief.
The Huskies and Titans will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The original schedule, which called for single games Saturday and Sunday, was revised due to forecasts for bad weather on Sunday.
