SEATTLE - BYU broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth, scoring five runs in the final inning to beat the Washington baseball team, 9-6, Friday at a rainy Husky Ballpark.
On Thursday, the Cougars (6-3) opened the three-game series with a 3-2 win, breaking a 2-2 tie with a run in the ninth. Washington fell to 1-7 on the season with the loss.
In the ninth, pinch hitter Chase Frampton led off with a bloop single to shallow right. After an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt and a flyout put runners at first and second with one out, Jaycob Brugman doubled into the left-field corner, scoring pinch runner Alex Hancock from second to break the 4-4 tie.
Inglemoor High grad Stephen Wells followed with a double to left, driving in two more, and then scored on a single from Andrew Law. Ryan Bernal's RBI single later in the inning scored Law to account for the ninth BYU run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Huskies Troy Scott and Ryan Wiggins hit back-to-back, run-scoring doubles to narrow the gap.
BYU reliever Kolton Mahoney (1-0) picked up the win after entering the game to start the eighth inning. UW senior reliever Geoff Brown (0-2) took the loss, as he was charged with four runs in the ninth.
Husky starter Aaron West pitched well in a no-decision, working six innings and striking out eight, a career high. Three of the six hits he allowed came in succession in the fourth, accounting for all three runs he gave up.
The Huskies grabbed the early leading, scoring two in the first off of BYU starter Taylor Cole, who entered the game having not allowed a run in 12 innings this season.
Freshman Spencer Rogers led off the game with a single. After a hit batter and a bunt put runners at second and third, a groundout from Jacob Lamb plated Rogers. Eric Peterson followed with a single to center, scoring Caleb Brown from second to make it a 2-0 UW lead.
BYU, held to one hit over the first three innings, broke through in the fourth. After a single from Alex Wolfe and a double from Ryan Bernal, freshman Dillon Robinson belted a three-run homer to right, giving the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.
Washington scored a pair in the seventh move back in front. With runners aboard at first and third and two outs, a wild pitch allowed Rogers to score from third base, tying the game at 3-3. Peterson followed with a single through the left side, scoring Chase Anselment from second with the go-ahead run.
However, BYU replied in the eight, tying the game at 4-4. With one out the bases loaded on three walks, Bernal singled through the right side, driving in a runner, but Andrew Law, trying to score from second base, was gunned out by Anselment, keeping the score at 4-4.
Peterson led the way for Washington's offense, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Huskies and Cougars wrap up the series with a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday. Fans can watch live video of the game, at no cost, on gohuskies.com.
