SEATTLE - Cal's Tony Renda had three hits, including a crucial three-run double in a five-run second inning, as the 16th-ranked Bears beat the Washington baseball team, 7-2, in the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark.
Washington (10-22 overall, 2-6 in the Pac-10) had taken the lead with two runs in the first, but the Bears (22-9, 8-3) took back the lead for good with the five-run second inning. Renda finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI.
After giving up two in the first, Cal starter Justin Jones (5-2) held the Huskies scoreless until the ninth, when he hit a batter and walked two to begin the inning before being relieved. In the end, he went eight-plus innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Husky starter Aaron West (1-6) took the loss as he allowed seven runs over four and one-third innings. Freshman reliever Zach Wright replaced him in the fifth and went three and one-third innings before allowing his first hit. He finished with three and two-thirds of one-hit relief for the UW.
The Huskies, who were limited to only one run by Jones over eight and one-third innings last year, got to the lefty early on Saturday. After Caleb Brown walked and moved to second on a bunt to open the bottom of the first, Jacob Lamb went the other way, doubling down the left-field line to score Brown. After taking third on a groundout, Lamb scored on an infield single from Troy Scott, staking the UW with a 2-0 lead.
Cal, however, was quick to respond, scoring five in the second. Mitch Delfino drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single from Darrel Matthews and then scored when Andrew Knapp bounced a single up the middle. Austin Booker followed with a sharp liner back through the box, scoring Matthews to tie the score at 2-2.
The Bears then loaded the bases on another single and, after a second out, Tony Renda hit a double that rolled all the way to the wall in right-center, clearing the bases to give Cal a 5-2 lead.
In the fifth, Cal added two more. With Marcus Semien and Renda aboard at the corners with no outs, catcher Chadd Krist hit his 17th double of the season into right field, scoring both runners to make it 7-2. Cal added an eighth run in the ninth inning on a bases-loaded walk.
Lamb and Scott each had two hits and an RBI for Washington. Catcher B.K. Santy also contributed a pair of hits.
The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Fans can watch live video and following live stats at gohuskies.com.
