TUCSON, Ariz. – The final and deciding game of the Pac-10 series in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday went to the host Wildcats, 6-1. The No. 7/8 Huskies dropped their first Pac-10 series of the year on the weekend, falling to 30-6 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Wildcats, ranked No. 8/7, improve to 36-8 and 6-2.
After an impressive performance against the Wildcats on game one Friday, freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) got the start again in game three. However, this outing was a little different for the right-handed pitcher. Inglesby picked up the loss in the complete game, falling to 18-3 on the year. She allowed six runs on 10 hits while recording four strikeouts.
“Arizona is a great hitting team so it's tough to keep them off balance with Kaitlin being featured each day,” said senior Morgan Stuart. “It's tough having it (our offense) start in the seventh so in future games were are going to try to put pressure on earlier. This is something that Kaitlin and our team is going to learn from.”
All-American Kenzie Fowler got the start for Arizona and pitched a no hitter through three innings before being hit by a foul ball from her own teammate in the bottom of the third in the dugout. Fowler was hit in the head and left the ballpark. She was not factored into the decision. Instead, freshman Shelby Babcock earned her second-straight win against the Huskies, pitching the final four innings allowing one run on four hits.
The Wildcats got to Inglesby early as the first run scored on a walk with bases loaded. A sacrifice fly made it 2-0 after one.
Two more runs came across for the home team in the third with a bases loaded infield single and another bases loaded walk.
Brittany Lastrapes led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to increase the lead to 5-0.
The first hit of the game for UW game in the fifth as freshman Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) singled to left. Senior Ashley Tuiasosopo (Woodinville, Calif.) followed with a single of her own but the Huskies were unable to get a run on the board.
Another solo home run by Arizona in the sixth gave the Wildcats their final run. The homer was hit by Stacie Chambers.
In the top of the seventh, Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) and Jones led off with singles. After sophomore Maggie Wagner (Woodinville, Wash.) got on base to load the bases, freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) hit an RBI single as Stuart scored.
UW had five hits in the game, led by Jones with two.
Pac-10 play continues for UW next week on the road at the defending National Champion UCLA.
