Huskies Take Top Two From No. 7 Bears In Loss

BERKELEY, Calif. - The All-American duo of Venise Chan and Denise Dy plowed through another talented Pac-10 squad today, but seventh-ranked California controlled the remainder of the singles matches and defeated the 23rd-ranked Huskies, 5-2, at the Hellman Tennis Complex this afternoon. Chan and Dy each improve to 19-1 in singles matches this year. As a team the Huskies slip to 12-9 and 2-5 in conference.
The anticipated top-five battle between fifth-ranked Dy and second-ranked Jana Juricova of Cal did not materialize, as Juricova sat out after playing doubles. Dy played second singles against 80th-ranked Annie Goransson and cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory, her 28th of the season, which ties for sixth on the single season list.
Chan, ranked 20th nationally, took the top spot against 18th-ranked Mari Andersson. Andersson had been 17-2 in dual play with her only two losses coming against 11th-ranked Jacqueline Cako of Arizona State, who Chan defeated two weeks ago. Chan overwhelmed Andersson to the tune of a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Eighteen might be Chan's lucky number, as she has defeated three different players this year that were all ranked 18th at the time of the match, including Florida State's Noemie Scharle and USC's Danielle Lao. She now has five wins this season over Top-20 players.
By that time, however, the Bears had clinched with victories at the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles spots. The last match was at No. 3 singles, where Anett Schutting defeated Samantha Smith, 6-3, 6-3, in what was surprisingly the closest match of the afternoon.
In doubles, Washington's makeshift lineup nearly pulled a shocker against the highly-ranked Bears. Cal rolled to an 8-1 win at third doubles, but UW was battling hard against two Top-25 tandems at the top two matches. At second doubles, Dy and Aleksandra Krsljanin took a 6-1 lead over the 25th-ranked duo of Goransson and Schutting, and then held on for an 8-6 victory. But Cal clinched the point when the nation's third-ranked team of Andersson and Jurivoca outlasted Chan and Smith, 8-6.
The Huskies will close the regular season with their toughest opponent yet, as they head to face No. 1-ranked Stanford, the defending NCAA Champions. That match is set for a 12 noon start time.
