SEATTLE - Arizona State scored five of its six runs in the third inning and starter Brady Rodgers pitched a four-hit shutout as the eighth-ranked Sun Devils beat the Washington baseball team, 6-0, Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Washington starter Geoff Brown (1-7) gave up the three runs in the third, but limited the Devils to just one additional tally in his seven and two-thirds innings of work.
Rodgers (8-3) went the distance for the win, limiting the UW to five hits, all singles. He walked one and struck out nine.
After having been set down in order the first two innings, the Devils (37-11 overall, 15-7 Pac-10) opened the third with a double down the left-field line from Deven Marrero. The Huskies got a popout and a groundout to keep Marrero on the basepaths, but Johnny Reuttiger came through with a single to score him after fouling off a handful of two-strike pitches.
Zach MacPhee followed Reuttigers's hit with a single and, with the runners moving, Riccio Torres reached on an infield single to shortstop. However, the throw bounced wide of the bag at first, allowing both runners to score. Joey DiMichele capped the inning when he belted a long home run to right field, his seventh of the season, to steak the Devils to a 5-0 lead.
In the eighth, ASU added its sixth run when Zach Wilson doubled and scored on Marrero's second double of the night.
The Huskies (15-33, 5-17 Pac-10) got three hits from freshman catcher Ryan Wiggins.
The series continues with a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday and the 2011 UW home schedule wraps up Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. contest.
