Dawgs Rally To Tie It In Eighth, But Stanford Prevails, 8-7

STANFORD, Calif. - UW freshman Ryan Wiggins drove in three runs, including two in a four-run, game-tying rally in the eighth, but Stanford got a run in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Huskies, 8-7, Saturday at Sunken Diamond.
Washington (13-29 overall, 4-13 in the Pac-10) trailed 7-3 entering the eight, but scored four runs to tie it at 7-7. However, the Cardinal (24-16, 8-9) got a leadoff double in the ninth and scored the game-winner on a two-out error.
Wiggins, the Husky designated hitter from West Seattle High, was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.
Stanford struck first with a run in the second inning. After loading the bases on two singles and a walk, Cardinal catcher Zach Jones drew a two-out walk to force in a run.
In the fourth, the Huskies went in front, 2-1, thanks to a two-out rally. With runners at first and second with two out, Wiggins singled to drive Troy Scott home from third. Eric Peterson followed with a single up the middle, sending home Chase Anselment to put the Huskies in front.
In the fifth, Husky second baseman Jacob Lamb drove his third homer of the year, a solo blast to left-center, to stretch the lead to 3-1.
The Cardinal drew even in the bottom of the fifth as pinch hitter Danny Diekroeger singled to drive in his older brother, Kenny, and Austin Wilson followed with an RBI single to knot the score at 3-3.
Stanford went back in front with a two-run sixth inning. After singles from Tyler Gaffney and Stephen Piscotty and a sacrifice bunt from Kenny Diekroeger, Brian Rigara singled up the middle to score both runners, making it a 5-3 Cardinal lead. Stanford added two more in the seventh, with Gaffney and Kenny Diekroeger driving in the runs, to make it a 7-3 advantage.
In the eighth, the Huskies responded, rallying off of Stanford closer Chris Reed, who entered the game to begin the inning. Lamb singled and Scott doubled to begin the inning. Catcher B.K. Santy singled to drive in Lamb and, after a single from Anselment loaded the bases, Wiggins drove in a pair, drawing the Huskies to within a run.
After a sacrifice bunt from Peterson moved runners to second and third, a groundout from pinch hitter Willy Reel drove in Anselment to tie the score at 7-7.
However, in the ninth, Stanford's Jones led off with a double, the Cardinal's first extra-base hit of the game after 19 singles. A flyout from Gaffney moved him to third and, after an intentional walk, a strikeout and an additional intentional walk loaded the bases with two out for Dave Giuliani, whose ground ball to second was mishandled by Reel, allowing the winning run to score.
UW reliever Adam Cimber, who came on in the eighth, suffered the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. Reed, who surrendered all four runs in the eighth, finished the game to pick up the win.
The series wraps up Sunday with a 12 noon game. The Huskies then return home for the following seven games, starting with next Friday's date with Oregon State at Safeco Field.
