Dawgs Leads Most Of The Way, But Fall 7-2 At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - After leading for the first seven innings of the game, the Washington baseball team allowed six runs in the eighth inning as Stanford beat the Huskies, 7-2, in the final game of a three-game series at Sunken Diamond.
Washington (13-30 overall, 4-14 in the Pac-10) scored a run in the first and were ahead the whole way until the eighth. Stanford improved to 25-16 overall, 9-9 in the Pac-10.
Freshman starter Austin Voth, a right-hander from Kentwood High, limited the Cardinal to six hits, walking one and striking out three in his six innings of work. He left with the Huskies leading and therefore didn't figure in the decision. Adam Cimber (2-4) was charged with the loss.
Stanford starter Jordan Pries went seven and one-third innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. Reliever Brian Busick (2-0), who entered with two outs in the eighth and pitched the rest of the way, got the win.
The Huskies opened the game with a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Brendan Gardner-Young led off with a walk and, after moving up on a Joe Meggs sacrifice, scored when Jacob Lamb singled.
In the third, UW shortstop Ty Afenir led off by doubling to left field. After advancing to third on a bunt from Eric Peterson, he scored on a wild pitch to increase the Husky lead to 2-0.
Stanford scored its first run in the bottom of the third when Austin Wilson singled and then scored on an error after a double from Tyler Gaffney.
Washington held the 2-1 lead until the eighth, when the Cardinal rallied for six runs. With Zach Jones and Stephen Piscotty on first and second with two outs, Brian Ragira tripled to center, driving in both runs to put Stanford in front, 3-2. Kenny Diekroeger followed with a double to drive in Ragira, and then scored himself when Danny Diekroeger singled, stretching the lead to 5-2.
After an error, Dave Giuliani doubled to drive in pinch runner Ben Clowe and a Zach Jones sacrifice fly capped the scoring with the Cardinal up by five.
The Huskies now return home for their next seven games, starting with next Friday's date with Oregon State at Safeco Field. Tickets (general admission) are just $8 for that game.
