MADISON, Wis. - In the first-ever meeting between UW women's soccer and Iowa State, the Cyclones prevailed with a 2-0 victory in Madison, Wis., Sunday morning.
The Huskies fall to 0-2-1 on the year while Iowa State improves to 3-0-1.
"This isn't obviously the start we wanted to our season," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We also didn't foresee the loss of three upperclassmen, Sarah Martinez, Kate Deines and Faustine Dufka. Our effort overall was actually much better today and we created opportunities to score and didn't. Our finishing has to be better and we have to put ourselves in the lead when we should."
Washington outshot Iowa State 18-14 as the game was even at the half.
Freshmen Sami Page (Moorpark, Calif.) and Christina Archer (Oakland, Calif.) along with redshirt sophomore Kelli Welch (Los Altos, Calif.) all earned their first career starts as Huskies. Redshirt freshman Morgan Swanson (Tacoma, Wash.) also made her Husky debut in the game.
Redshirt junior Kari Davidson (Portland, Ore.) got her first start in goal on the year, making 14 saves.
The winning goal from Iowa State came in the 60th minute by Meredith Skitt and was assisted by Emily Goldstein.30 yards out.
In the 68th minute, Iowa State got its second goal from Brittany Morgan that was assisted by Jennifer Dominguez and Margaret Powers.
Sophomore Allie Beahan (Sammamish, Wash.) led the Huskies with five shots and senior Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.) had four, respectively.
"The upside is that there were several individuals that stepped up today and we will have Kate, Sarah, and eventually Faustine back," Gallimore added.
The Huskies return to Seattle to host the Husky/Nike Invitational Sept. 2-4 which includes Washington, Portland, Seattle U and Boston U.
"I'm confident that our team will become better from the adversity we faced this last week," Gallimore said.
