LOS ANGELES - A year ago the UW women's soccer team pulled one of the biggest upsets of the season at UCLA and this season, the Huskies were close to doing it again but fell because of a late goal, 1-0, in Pac-12 play.
UW falls to 3-4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play while No. 3/2 UCLA remains undefeated at 8-0-1.
The Huskies were on defense a lot in the game but did great on the back line, making five total saves by senior keeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.).
UCLA took 16 shots, six on goal and had 14 corner kicks.
The lone goal came in the 79th minute as Chelsea Stewart scored on a free kick from the right side.
"We had a great defensive effort against a fast and talented UCLA team," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "We gave up a goal on a low driven free kick where Jorde was unable to see the ball until late and the wall broke. We didn't do as well in possession as we are capable of and we wore down having to defend too often. If we can defend that way from here on out but be more composed and threatening in the attack, we're going to be fine."
The Huskies return home for non-conference action vs. the University of San Francisco on Sunday at 4 p.m.
