Huskies Off To Best Start Since 2008

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Huskies trailed at the half, 1-0. The Huskies were outshot 11-5. But head coach Lesle Gallimore didn't let that get her team down as the UW women's soccer team rallied for two goals in the second half to defeat Syracuse 2-1 in N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.
UW improves to 3-0 on the season, making this the best start by a Husky team since the 2008 team went 7-0 to start the season. This is also the first time under Gallimore and first since 1991 that the first three Husky games of the season were on the road at an opponent's field, not at home or at a neutral site.
"It was a great team victory for our squad today," said Gallimore. "We are maturing with each match. The temperature was close to 90 and we had to rely heavily on our bench and they came through."
Freshman Isabel Farrell (Bellevue, Wash.) had two assists entering the game and scored the game-winning goal in her third collegiate game in the 74th minute against the Orange. Junior Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) had her second assist of the day. The shot came from the left side of the box.
"Izzy played well all weekend," Gallimore added. "Her fitness level allows her to work hard on both sides of the ball for long periods. The composure she showed on the game-winning goal was something you typically see from someone with more than just two college games under her belt."
The tying goal for the Huskies was made by junior Stine Schoening (Woodinville, Wash.) in the 63rd minute, also inside the box. She was assisted by Elston off of a corner and sophomore Jaclyn Softli (Sammamish, Wash.).
"I couldn't be more pleased to see Stine score," Gallimore continued. "She is a tough character and she was determined to get a goal."
In the 27th minute, Alexis Koval, assisted by Hanna Strong, scored the game's first goal. It was her third goal of the season for Syracuse and the first goal allowed by the Husky defense and goalkeepers this season.
"Syracuse is a much improved team from two years ago and has some fit and dangerous players on their team. We weathered a major storm in the first 15 minutes, only to give up a goal against the run of play. I am extremely proud of how our team responded in the second half. It was a gritty performance and we are pleased to be bringing home two wins," Gallimore added.
Senior Kari Davidson (Portland, Ore.) was active in goal for UW, making five saves in the game. She improves to 3-0 on the year.
Husky sophomore Chelsea Archer (Oakland, Calif.) had two shots on goal in the first half.
"Sami Page came in at the back and played very well giving Annie Sittauer and Lindsay Bos relief. Davidson, Schoening and Molly Boyd were solid all game. Our defending in the midfield improved this game as well which helped spark our attack.," said Gallimore.
Next weekend, the Huskies will host the annual UW/Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Field that features UW, Portland, Fresno State and LaSalle.
