SEATTLE - Cal Poly's Nick Torres hit two homers and accounted for all five runs to lead his team to a 5-3 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Torres, who also hit a solo homer for the Mustangs' only run in Friday's 2-1 Husky win, hit a three-run homer in the fourth and a two-run belt in the sixth. He finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBI.
UW starter Nick Palewicz (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over five and one-third innings. Cal Poly starter Matt Imhof improved to 2-0 with the win. In his five and two-thirds innings, he gave up three runs on nine hits.
Washington got on the board first with two runs in the third. With two outs, Joe Meggs reached on an infield single and, after stealing second base, he scored when Jayce Ray knocked a double into the left-field corner. Husky sophomore Robert Pehl followed with a single into left, driving in Ray to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however. In the top of the fourth, a walk and a hit batter put two aboard for Torres, who belted the first pitch he saw out to left for a three-run homer.
In the sixth, Torres came through again for the Mustangs. With Jimmy Allen aboard on a leadoff double, Torres lined a ball just inside the left-field foul pole for his second homer of the day and third of the series, stretching the Cal Poly lead to 5-2.
Washington got one back in the sixth. With Ray and Pehl aboard with no outs, Trevor Mitsui bounced into a double play, scoring Ray from third to cut the lead to 5-3.
Poly closer Reed Reilly came on in the ninth after the Huskies had gotten a pair of singles to bring the potential winning run to the plate. He got the final two outs to secure his fourth save of the year.
Four Huskies finished with two hits each: Meggs, Ray, Pehl and Camporeale, who were all 2-for-4. UW junior reliever Trevor Dunlap pitched the final three and two-thirds innings without allowing a run.
The Huskies and Mustangs close out the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
