EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon first baseman Ryon Healy hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the 12th-ranked Ducks to a 5-3 win over the Washington baseball team Thursday night at PK Park.
Washington (2-5 in the Pac-12, 6-17 overall) came back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead, but Oregon (6-1 Pac-12, 20-6 overall) scored one in the eighth to tie and then won it in the 10th. After two outs in the final inning, Tyler Baumgartner was hit by a pitch and Healy followed by lining his fifth homer of the season over the fence in straightaway left.
Oregon closer Jimmy Sherfy (2-0) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the win. Husky reliever Trevor Dunlap (0-1), who entered the game to begin the bottom of the 10th, was charged with the loss.
UW starter Jared Fisher, making just his fourth college start, gave up a pair of runs in the first inning, but that was it. In his six innings, he allowed just three hits and struck out four.
Healy finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead the Ducks. Husky Andrew Ely was 2-for-4 with a run to pace the Dawgs.
Oregon scored a pair of runs with two outs in the first to take the lead. With two down and a runner aboard at first thanks to walk, Mitchell Tolman belted a double to right field to drive in the opening run. Scott Heineman followed with a single to left, driving in Tolman to make it 2-0.
Washington broke through in the fourth, thanks to some Oregon miscues. Joe Meggs led off the inning by reaching base on a throwing error by the Ducks shortstop and moved to second when Robert Pehl was hit by a pitch. After the next two batters made outs, catcher Ryan Wiggins knocked a single to the left-center gap, driving home Meggs to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the fifth, the Dawgs took the lead with a pair of runs. Ely led off by hitting a double to the gap in left-center. After Ty Afenir was hit by a pitcher, runners advanced to second and third on a bunt from Jayce Ray. Meggs followed by grounding to second, plating Ely to tie the score. Pehl then dropped a single down the right-field line, putting the Dawgs on top, 3-2.
Meanwhile, Fisher retired 15 Ducks in a row from the end of the first until a two-out single in the sixth. He gave way to junior reliever Tyler Davis to begin the seventh.
In the eighth, a two-out rally from the Ducks tied the score at 3-3. With two down, Tyler Baumgartner doubled to left-center and Healy followed with a single to left, scoring Baumgartner to knot the score.
The Huskies and Ducks play the second game of the three-game series Friday at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's series finale starts at 7:00 p.m. and will air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
