SEATTLE - Jayce Ray had three hits and Will Sparks belted a two-run homer as the Washington baseball team beat SeattleU, 4-2, behind a combination of five pitchers Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
Ray, a senior from Sonoma, Calif., finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Sparks, making his second start of the year, connected on his first career homer for the Huskies (4-8). Sparks was 2-for-3 on the night.
Jared Fisher, making his first start of the year for the UW, worked the first four innings. Nick Palewicz (2-2), who pitched the fifth, was awarded the win. Zach Wright and Austin Voth each pitched a scoreless inning and Tyler Kane worked the final two frames to complete the victory.
Freshman starter Skyler Genger (0-4) gave up three runs on six hits and took the loss for the Redhawks (3-10).
Washington broke through for the game's first run in the third. Ray led off the inning with a double to deep left-center and, after taking third on a groundout, he scored on a single from Robert Pehl, giving the UW a 1-0 edge.
In the fourth, the Huskies added on. Third baseman Alex Schmidt walked and Sparks followed with a homer to deep left-center, stretching the lead to 3-0.
The following inning, Ray got it started with a single. After a couple of outs moved him up to third, he scored on a two-out double from first baseman Trevor Mitsui, making it a 4-0 game.
SeattleU broke through for its first run in the eighth. After a single from Sean Narby, Grant Newton belted a long double to right-center, scoring Narby from first. After another single, a long fly ball to center from Cullen Hendrickson brought in a second run to cut the UW lead in half.
Down 4-2 in the ninth, the Redhawks got a one-out double from Ryan Somers and a single from Brian Olson to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Kane got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
The Huskies next travel to face No. 8 LSU this weekend in Baton Rouge, marking the UW's first-ever visit to an SEC school during the regular season. The three-game series gets underway Friday.
