Successful Alumni Weekend Capped With Game At Husky Ballpark
October 22, 2018 | Baseball
This past weekend marked another fun weekend for Husky Baseball alumni as they gathered to rekindle old friendships and celebrated their time as student athletes at the University of Washington.
On Friday, former players gathered with current UW staff and players for a round at The Golf Club at Redmond Ridge. Saturday, many of the alumni gathered for UW football's victory over Colorado, while the current players took on Oregon at SafecoΒ Field in a scrimmage. The weekend was capped with an alumni baseball game with 30-plus former players gathered at Husky Ballpark to participate or watch their former teammates strap on the gear.
Among those in attendance on Sunday were current Florida Marlins starting pitcher Jeff Brigham, who came to cheer on his fellow UW alumni. And while he didn't suit up, plenty of former Huskies did and put on quite a show.
Mike Wagner (2001-03) showed he still has it by winning the home run derby. Troy Woodward (1991-93) provided the big spark in the 3-2 game with a walk-off, two-run single. Will BalloweΒ (2013-16) and Geoff Brown (2008-11) -- who were both pitchers in their time as Huskies -- each had doubles in the game, while Kyle London (2014-17) -- who was an outfielder at Washington -- pitched a scoreless inning of relief. The true workhorse of the group was Gerry Scalzo (1974, 76), who caught two innings behind the dish despite being in his 60s.Β
Thank you to all Husky Baseball alumni who participated this weekend and all alumni for their continued support of the program. We look forward to seeing everybody next year!
