
Huskies Continue Road Trip At Texas, Mary Nutter Classic

SEATTLE - The #1 Washington Huskies continue their two-week road trip, taking on the Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas before heading to the Mary Nutter Classic. Washington is 12-0 on the season and ranked #1 in the nation by the NFCA for the first time since 2010 and 33rd time in school history. The Huskies will take on Notre Dame, #6 Texas A&M, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Long Beach State at the Mary Nutter Classic.
Last week, the Huskies swept the Bearkat Softball Classic, going 5-0 at that tournament before winning two more games against Lamar on Monday. Washington allowed just two runs in those seven games, with its season ERA of 0.43 fifth in the nation and best in the Pac-12. Taran Alvelo struck out 12 and a career-high 13 in her two starts, while Gabbie Plain made it three consecutive games with a career-best eight strikeouts.
Sis Bates extended her hitting streak to 12 games as the nation's highest-scoring team scored eight or more in all but one game on the week. Bates is second in the nation in runs scored as Washington's top of the order are 1-2-3 in runs in the NCAA. Taylor Van Zee, who also leads the nation in doubles with eight and is second in slugging percentage at 1.361, has the run lead with 26 on the season, while Kirstyn Thomas, the NCAA's leader in home runs (8), RBI (24), and slugging percentage (1.389) comes in third with 24.
The Huskies have dominated the Pac-12 leaderboards thus far in the season as well. Washington is first in the conference in batting average (.445), runs scored (133), doubles (24), walks (50), slugging percentage (.819), hits 9138), on-base percentage (.528), RBI (120), and home runs (28) offensively. On the pitching side, the Huskies have the top spot in the Pac-12 in ERA (0.43), opposing batting average (.126), and strikeouts (106) despite pitching just 65.0 innings thus far, the 6th-lowest total in the conference.
Washington's opponents this week are a combined 40-14 this year, led by Texas A&M's 9-0 record and Long Beach State's 9-1 mark. Notre Dame, ranked 25th by ESPN/USA Softball, will be the first ranked opponent faced by the Huskies this year. Texas A&M was one of the five teams to receive at least one first-place vote in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll, with Washington leading the way with 15 first-place votes.
The first game of the week will be Wednesday, February 21 as Washington takes on Texas at 3:00 pm PT. The Mary Nutter Classic begins for Washington with a Friday, February 23 game against Notre Dame at 5:30 pm PT, broadcast live on FloSoftball.
