Washington Opens Pac-12 Play at Oregon State Saturday

The Huskies open up Pac-12 play this week, heading south to face Oregon State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The match is not being broadcast but live stats are available through OSUBeavers.com or by visiting the Live Stats link on the men's soccer schedule on GoHuskies.com.
Washington is looking to get back in the win column after a pair of tough defeats. On Sunday, the Huskies were upset by crosstown rival Seattle U 2-0 in the WAC/101 Club Cup match at Husky Soccer Stadium. It was the second-straight match UW was shutout after scoring at least two goals in each of the team's first six matches.
The Huskies open Pac-12 play with three-straight road games and five of their first seven on the road before closing the season with four-straight home games--including three Pac-12 matches.
Washington finished the 2017 season with a 5-4-1 record in Pac-12 play, placing third in the conference standings. Washington has finished no worse than third in seven seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark, winning the title in 2013 and finishing as the runner-up three times.
Kyle Coffee and Joey Parish continue to lead the team in points with nine each. Coffee has four goals and an assist this season while Parish has added three goals and three assists.
The Oregon State Beavers At A Glance
The Beavers have turned heads under first-year Head Coach Terry Boss, who has OSU off to a 4-2-2 start. Oregon State had a six-match unbeaten streak snapped on Friday, falling 2-1 at Portland. Boss was an assistant at OSU in 2013 and spent four seasons as an assistant at Virginia. Now, in his first season as head coach, he looks to turn around a team that has finished below .500 in each of the last three seasons.
The offense has been sharp, scoring an average of 1.5 goals per game. Senior forward Don Tchilao leads the way with four goals and has added three assists. Oregon State leads the conference in shots (120; 15.0 per game) and in corner kicks (51; 6.38 per game)
Series History vs. Oregon State
Washington holds a 40-14-4 overall record against Oregon State including an 18-7-4 mark in games in Corvallis. The Beavers have held an edge in the series lately, winning two of the last three matches including a 4-3 win at OSU last season. In that wild affair, Washington held a 2-0 halftime lead before Oregon State scored four goals over a 27-minute stretch and held off a late push for the victory. The Beavers' victory ended a UW five-match unbeaten streak in games in Corvallis.
Dominating Defense
Washington's defense has been impressive this season, allowing just seven goals and posting four shutouts through eight matches. The Huskies are second in the Pac-12 and 44th in the NCAA with a 0.86 goals against average.
The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 22 total shots on goal through eight matches (2.75 per match) and 70 shots overall. Despite a loss to Seattle U, the Huskies limited the Redhawks–who came into the match ranked second in the NCAA in shots per game–to just 10 shots overall, well off their average of 18.5 coming into the match.
Freshman center back Ethan Bartlow is the only field player to play in all 642 minutes this year, helping anchor the Huskies' back line with senior captain Quentin Pearson. Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Saif Kerawala leads the conference and is 11th nationally with four shutouts. He also is second in the Pac-12 with a 0.86 goals against average.
That's Just Offensive, Man
Despite a pair of setbacks in the last two matches, the Washington offense has been impressive through the first part of the season, scoring 13 goals through its first eight matches. The Huskies are averaging 1.63 goals per match thus far, ranking second in the Pac-12 and are 41st in the NCAA with 5.48 points per match as well.
A total of 11 Huskies have recorded points this season–including nine with two or more points–with five different players scoring goals. Seniors Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies have each scored four goals with junior Joey Parish adding three goals and three assists.
Last year, Washington scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Twice is Fun
Prior to its last two defeats, the Huskies had scored 2+ goals in eight-straight matches, dating back to last season. That matched the longest streak of games with 2+ goals since the 1991-92 season and ended up one shy of the program record of nine set during the 1981 season. Washington is 5-1-0 this season when scoring two or more goals in a match.
Pac-12 Rankings
A number of Huskies are ranked among the top players in the conference. Saif Kerawala leads the Pac-12 and is 11th in the NCAA with four shutouts–just two behind the national leaders. He is also second in goals against average at 0.86. Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies currently lead the Pac-12 with two game-winning goals each. Coffee and Menzies are also tied for second with four total goals and Coffee and Joey Parish tied for fourth with nine total points. Menzies ranks third in the Pac-12 in shot accuracy, scoring on 59.1% of his shots taken this year.
Overtime Blues
The Huskies' 3-2 double-overtime loss at Denver extended their streak to five straight overtime matches without a victory (0-4-1). Washington went 0-3-1 in four OT matches in 2017. The Huskies last overtime win was a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.
Stopping the PKs
It's been a while since Washington has allowed a penalty kick opportunity and even longer since giving up a PK goal: 58 matches and counting. The last spot kick taken against the Huskies came last year at San Diego State (10/26/17), an attempt which was saved by Saif Kerawala. The last time a PK was converted by an opponent came during the 2015 season when UCLA was awarded three PKs–converting two–in a wild 3-2 double-overtime victory at Husky Soccer Stadium (10/4/15).
Record Crowd
The Huskies match against Seattle U on Sunday, drew a crowd of 2,994 fans–the fourth-largest crowd in Husky Soccer Stadium history. Three of the top four crowds to watch the Huskies on Montlake came against the Redhawks including a record 3,419 fans who witnessed UW down Seattle U 2-1 in 2016.
Parish the Thought
Joey Parish was an outstanding utility player for the Huskies two weeks ago. The junior scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the matches against Gonzaga and CSUN to open the week. On Sunday, he was called into duty on defense, filling in at right back and helping the Huskies post their fourth shutout out of the season.
Parish is tied for the team lead with nine points, recording three goals and three assists on the year. For his efforts last week, Parish was named to the DI Team of the Week, the second time this season he has earned the honor.
Menzies the Man!
Senior Scott Menzies recorded a pair of goals against Gonzaga, tying him for the team lead with four on the season. Menzies, who ranks second in the Pac-12 with four goals, now has 13 in his career with seven coming during the 2017 season. Of those 13, six have been match-winners, though his goal against Maryland was his only such goal in 2018.
Caution! Hot Coffee!
Kyle Coffee scored a goal in each of the Huskies' last two home matches, including the match-winner against No. 14 Akron on Sunday. Dating back to last season, Coffee has nine goals in UW's last 12 matches. He is tied for the team lead with nine points and is also tied for the team lead with four goals on the season. Coffee now has 15 career goals for the Huskies.
Teves Tallies No. 1
Freshman Dylan Teves recorded his first collegiate goal with a blast in the 63rd minute at No. 19 Denver. Teves worked around a pair of defenders and cracked a shot from just outside of the box for his tally of the season.
In the Rankings ...
The Huskies dropped out of the Top 25 in the coaches poll, but are the second team in the receiving votes category. UW checks in at No. 17 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings, 20th in the Soccer America poll and 27th in the College Soccer News poll.
RPI Check-In
The first NCAA RPI rating of the 2018 season was released on Monday and Washington was ranked at No. 23. The ranking was the highest of any Pac-12 team through the early going.
Number 200 for Clark
UW's match vs. New Mexico on Aug. 27 was the 200th match coached by UW Head Coach Jamie Clark in 11 seasons. Clark posted a 128-50-22 record in 200 matches during three stops as a head coach including an 89-35-19 record at Washington. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one season at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.
