BYU Shuts Out Huskies, 4-0, To Win Series
April 20, 2019 | Baseball
SEATTLE – BYU scored three times in the sixth inning, which proved to be plenty for starting pitcher Justin Sterner and two relievers, as the Cougars handed Washington a 4-0 defeat Saturday at Husky Ballpark. The win gave the Cougars (26-10) a 2-1 series win over the Huskies (17-17).
The teams were engaged in a pitcher's battle until BYU broke the ice with three runs in the sixth. The Cougars got their first run on an RBI double by Brock Hale off Chris Micheles (3-2) and then scored their next two runs on a bases loaded hit by pitch and walk.
They would add an unearned insurance run on the board in the eighth.
The Huskies struggled to get base runners against Sterner (7-3), putting two on via hits and one by an error. The sophomore pitcher struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings of work and did not walk a batter in picking up his seventh win of the year.
The Huskies best opportunity to get on the board came in the ninth after they started the inning with a walk to Ramon Bramasco and a Braiden Ward single. But BYU called on its freshman phenom Reid McLaughlin and he set down the next three Huskies without allowing a run.
Freshman David Rhodes got the start and allowed two hits in four shutout innings to lower his ERA to 3.21.
Offensively, the Huskies got hits from Ben Baird, Colton Cassinelli and Ward.
UW heads to Portland to face the Pilots on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. before returning home for a three-game series vs. Arizona State, Friday through Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
